Our First grade program continues to help students grow in their relationship with Jesus. They build independence both in and outside of the classroom and begin to dig deeper into topics such as STEM and reading.
Curriculum
Religion
Our Religion curriculum aims to nurture the growing relationship between Jesus and each child. Students will encounter daily religion lessons that teach about the Mass, Jesus’ role in our lives, the Holy Days, and liturgical seasons celebrated throughout the year. Students will explore the words and meanings of basic prayers.
English/Language Arts
Our English/Language Arts curriculum is derived from the Benchmark Advanced program. This program is aligned with Science of Reading research and includes reading, writing, grammar, and phonics instruction. It aims to develop literacy skills and knowledge through a balance of literary and informational texts, with a focus on building vocabulary and knowledge across various subjects. It integrates writing, speaking, and listening, and emphasizes critical thinking through guided instruction and knowledge-building activities.
MATH
Our Math Curriculum utilizes the My Math program, teachers challenge students while inspiring them to embrace math through meaningful real-world applications. The three components of rigor— conceptual understanding, procedural skill and fluency, and application, —are woven with equal intensity throughout the program, enabling students to steadily grow their math ability and confidence. Topics covered include place value, time, money, measurement, geometry, and computation with the mastery of addition and subtraction facts up to 18.
Science
Our Science curriculum encourages children to make discoveries about their environment and themselves. Our Students will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities, and to investigate, make hypotheses, test ideas, and draw conclusions. They will study plants, animals, food chains, the human body, seasons, weather, matter, force and gravity, nutrition, and birds.
Social Studies
Our Social Studies curriculum covers what it means to be a community helper and have good character. Our students also study important people in history, including presidents and explorers, and learn about different cultures around the world.
