Second Grade

Our Second grade program builds on the foundation formed over the first few years at Incarnation. Students deepen their relationship with Jesus as they prepare for First Communion and First Reconciliation.

Curriculum

Religion
Our Religion curriculum covers the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and the Eucharist.  Students are instructed in the parts of the Mass and how we participate in the Mass.  They also study Holy days and liturgical seasons as well as memorizing various prayers. These prayers include The Sign of the Cross, Act of Contrition, Our Father, and Hail Mary.

Students attending Incarnation School will receive sacramental preparation from both the school and Our Lady of Light Family of Parishes, as the parish is responsible for administrating the sacraments to all students.

English/Language arts
Our English/Language Arts curriculum is derived from the Benchmark Advanced program. This program is aligned with Science of Reading research and includes reading, writing, grammar, and phonics instruction. It aims to develop literacy skills and knowledge through a balance of literary and informational texts, with a focus on building vocabulary and knowledge across various subjects. It integrates writing, speaking, and listening, and emphasizes critical thinking through guided instruction and knowledge-building activities.
MATH
Our Math curriculum covers addition and subtraction of two- and three-digit numbers, regrouping, number patterns, place value to 1,000, money, data analysis, time, measurement, and geometry. Students are also exposed to beginning concepts of multiplication and division. They are given timed tests on basic addition and subtraction facts twice each week.
SCIENCE
Our Science curriculum is based on the Into Science series. Through this program, students engage in hands-on activities and experiments to explore a variety of topics, including the Engineering Design Process, the three states of matter, water on Earth, landforms, and the slow and rapid changes that shape Earth’s surface. They also study different habitats and the plants and animals that inhabit them. Additionally, students investigate the anatomy and functions of the eyes and ears, deepening their understanding of human biology.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our Social Studies curriculum covers great figures in American history, concepts of map and globe skills, communities, important people and events in history, other cultures, and landforms.  Hands-on activities and literature are combined for real-life learning.
